This was one of the galleries most challenging and rewarding installations. Thanks to the help of a creative guest curator, skilled technicians, curatorial assistants and a few frazzled installation co-ordinators the show went up without a hitch - and looks fantastic!

Tuesday night - 15 hours to opening.

The mixed media exhibit was made up largely of works on paper - process drawings and original comics. To assist the guest curator, Allan Antliff, our newest curatorial assistant, Katie Lemmon, helped slip all the works into acid free sheets. This made the works easier to handle (as we could forgo the cotton gloves while they are protected under plastic) and became a means to adhere them to the wall.

The 4 summer curatorial assistants worked on prepping the gallery space for the installation, patching walls and painting plinths.

THE ART OF SUBVERSION COMES TO

UVIC’S LEGACY ART GALLERY AND CAFÉ

The University of Victoria’s Legacy Art Gallery and Café presents Graphic Radicals, a collection of works from the New York artist collective World War 3 Illustrated, from Aug. 11 to Oct. 31, 2010.

Graphic Radicals is a “themed” presentation of the work of World War 3 Illustrated from the 1980s to the present day. The art confronts issues such as anti-war protests, squatting in New York, the tragedies of 9-11, racism, prisons and anarchism.

“This is some of the most hard-hitting, socially-engaged art of the last thirty years,” said Allan Antliff, Canada Research Chair in Modern Art at UVic. “Simply put, this artists’ collective took illustration to a new level by confronting the important issues of our time in uncompromising terms.”

Graphic Radicals includes dozens of works in the form of posters, graphic illustrations, paintings, banners and other media.

World War 3 Illustrated is a New York-based artist collective. It was founded in 1980 by Seth Tobocman and Peter Kuper to provide a creative venue for political comics, graphics and stories.

The Legacy Art Gallery and Café, located at 630 Yates Street in downtown Victoria, is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It operates on a non-profit basis. Admission is free. For more information visit uvac.uvic.ca or call 250-381-7670.
